Does this plan cover maternity?

The Student Secure Budget and Select do provide for usual, reasonable and customary charges for any pregnancy where inception occurs after the plan effective date. Benefits include, but are not limited to, prenatal, delivery, and post-natal care as well as expenses for miscarriage and complications of pregnancy. Routine Nursery Care of Newborns is also covered, subject to the maximum shown on the full table of benefits. The Student Secure Smart plan does not provide Maternity coverage. 

Are sports covered under this policy?

The Student Secure Budget and Select level both cover medical expenses for injuries and illnesses that result from participation in intercollegiate, interscholastic, intramural, or club sports up to a maximum of $5,000 per Injury or Illness with the Select level and $3,000 per injury or Illness with the Budget level. 

Does this plan have dental or vision?

The Student Secure plan does not provide any coverage for vision. Accidental dental is covered if you suffer an accident to your teeth and need to have dental surgery with coverage of $250 per tooth up to a maximum of $500 on the Select or Budget plans only. Regular dental check-ups or visits are not covered – however if you do have unexpected dental pain the plan will pay $100 towards expenses for treatment for this pain if you are on the Select or Budget plan. The Smart level does not provide any dental coverage. If you require a more comprehensive dental insurance plan, please see our dental plans. 

What does Usual Reasonable and Customary (URC) mean?

Usual Reasonable and Customary is a term that insurance companies use to describe a limitation on their responsibility to pay for eligible medical expenses. Basically, URC refers to the fee typically charged by a provider for a specific procedure in a specific geographic area. So if a particular procedure typically costs $5,000 in the New York City area, and most providers customarily charge about $5,000 for that procedure, the insurance company will not pay your provider in New York City $10,000 for the same exact procedure. Instead, they will limit their payment amount to “Usual Reasonable and Customary” – in this example, $5,000. 

What is the deductible and coinsurance?

The Student Secure plan has two out of pocket expenses: the deductible and the coinsurance.

The deductible is the amount you are required to pay to the doctor or hospital before the insurance company will pay toward your eligible expenses. On the Student Secure plan, it is paid once for every new illness or injury – not per visit. If you became ill or injured and went to the doctor you would pay the deductible, but if you went for a follow-up visit on that same condition you would not need to pay the deductible again since you’ve already paid it for that condition.

After the deductible, there is coinsurance which is a cost-sharing between you and the insurance. It’s a percentage that is covered by you and the insurance company, and will vary depending on the plan level you select. Here’s an overview of the deductible and coinsurance for each plan:

Smart – The plan has a $50 deductible per injury or illness whether you are in the Plan Network, outside the US, or at the Student Health Center. If you are in the US, but outside the network, your deductible will be $100 per injury or illness. After the deductible, the plan covers 80% up until the policy maximum.

Budget – The plan has a $45 deductible per injury or illness whether you are in the Plan Network, outside the US, or at the Student Health Center. If you are in the US, but outside the network, your deductible will be $90 per injury or illness. After the deductible, the plan covers 80% of the next $25,000 and then 100% up to the policy maximum.

Select – The plan has a $25 deductible per injury or illness whether you are in the Plan Network, outside the US, or at the Student Health Center. If you are in the US, but outside the network, your deductible will be $50 per injury or illness. After the deductible, if you stay inside the network, go to the Student Health Center, or are located outside the US, the plan offers 100% up until the policy maximum. If you are in the US outside the Plan Network, the plan will cover 80% of the next $5,000 after the deductible, then 100% up to the policy maximum.

Please note that there is an additional ER deductible of $100 (Select) or $350 (Smart/Budget) paid once per condition if you seek treatment at the Emergency Room inside the US. 

Will I get home country coverage?

The Student Secure provides you with coverage for up to 15 days for medical expenses ONLY should you return back to your home country for an incidental visit. To receive the benefit, once you have arrived home, you must return abroad within 15 days – either to the host country or another country en route to your host country. Please also note that the return to your home country cannot be taken for the purpose of receiving medical treatment for an injury or illness that began when you were abroad. 

What providers can I go to?

You are free to visit any provider you would like when seeking treatment under the Student Secure plan, however, you are encouraged to visit:

  • Student Health Center – most schools offer a student health center which should be your first option in seeking treatment
  • Coventry Provider Network – the Coventry Provider Network will accept the Student Secure Insurance plan

When visiting the Student Health Center and Coventry Provider Network your insurance payments will be less, as per the full table of benefits – so where possible please visit these providers. 

What is Pre-certification?

Pre-certification is when you or your attending physician call the 24-hour assistance number with information about your case and condition if you have any of the following:

  • Hospitalizations, Surgeries, Emergency Evacuations, Emergency Reunions, Trip Interruptions, Repatriation of Remains, Computerized Tomography (CAT Scan) and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) 

How are claims paid?

Claims will be paid depending on where you are located and where you seek treatment:

  • In-network while inside the USA – When you visit a provider that is part of the plan network your insurance bill is typically paid directly, without the need for an insurance claim form. This setup will depend on the particular provider you go to and so you will need to ask the provider before you seek treatment.
  • Out-of-network while inside the USA – When you visit a provider that is outside the network, you will need to pay for all services up front and then submit a claim form for reimbursement.
  • Outside the USA – When visiting a provider around the world, please pay for the services up front and then submit a claim form for reimbursement.

If you are hospitalized for an emergency or planned hospitalization you will need to call the 24-hour emergency assistance number located on the back of your insurance ID card and they will assist you further with settling the hospital bills.

Who underwrites the Student Secure plan?

Where will this plan cover me?

The Student Secure plan will cover you as an international student or study abroad student anywhere in the world, as long as you are outside of your home country. 

Am I eligible to apply for the Student Secure?

If you are a student in the USA on the F1 or J1 visa, you are automatically eligible for the Student Secure. Outside of those visa categories and if you are using the plan anywhere in the world, you need to be a full-time student or scholar, or within 31 days of being a full-time student. 

Will this plan work for me while on OPT/CPT?

Yes, students on OPT or CPT are eligible for the Student Secure, even while on post-completion OPT, as long as you maintain valid F1 status. 

Does this plan work for scholars?

Full-time Scholar who is outside their home country and affiliated with an educational institution and performing work or research for at least 30 hours per week are eligible for the Student Secure plan. These activities may include but not be limited to performing research in an area of specialty or teaching for a temporary period of time. This requirement is waived for Participants within the US holding a valid F1 visa. 

When can I purchase my plan online?

You can purchase your plan six months in advance of when you would like your policy to begin. The first premium will be charged immediately upon applying to the policy. If you pay monthly, the first premium will be charged when you apply and the second premium will be charged after one month after your plan has begun. 

Will I get my documents immediately?

Yes, when you apply online through our website and make sure the “online fulfillment” option is selected, we will send all your documents to you immediately via email. You will then need to download these documents, print them off and show them as proof of coverage. Also, within a few hours of applying online your account will be available through the “Student Zone”, so you can log in and access all your documents again anytime you need.

When can my plan begin?

You can apply for coverage to start under the Student Secure plan from today’s date and any date in the future that you select on the application form. 

What form of payment do you accept?

The Student Secure is denominated in US dollars and can be purchased online using a credit or debit card. We accept Visa, MasterCard, Discover and American Express. Applying online is the easiest method, as you can receive your confirmation documents immediately via email.  You are also welcome to use a friend or family member’s credit or debit card with their permission to purchase the plan. If you would prefer to pay using check and wire transfer, please contact us for more information. 

What is a Beneficiary?

The Student Secure Select plan includes benefits that provide payments in the event you should pass away while covered under the plan. The beneficiary is the person who you designate to receive these funds should this happen. Typically you would name your mother, father, brother, sister or husband or wife as a beneficiary – however you can put any name you wish to be your beneficiary, including your estate. 

Can I extend or renew my insurance plan?

After your initial purchase, you may extend your coverage up to a maximum of 364 days from the initial effective date. Provided there is no break in coverage, you will not be required to re-satisfy the Deductible and Coinsurance, nor will benefit limits be reset.

You may renew your coverage for up to 4 years as long as you continue to meet the eligibility requirements. Renewal may be completed within the last 6 months of a 364 day Certificate Period. Deductible and Coinsurance must be re-satisfied as of each renewal date. After 4 years of continuous coverage or any break in coverage, a new plan must be purchased. A new Application is required and you must re-satisfy your Deductible, Coinsurance, Pre-existing Condition provisions, and all other benefit limits. Extensions and renewals must be made online with payment by credit card and there will be a $5 administration fee for each renewal and extension. Can I cancel my Student Secure plan?

To be eligible for a full refund, the request for cancellation must be received prior to the effective date. Cancellation requests received after the effective date will be subject to the following conditions:

  • A $25 cancellation fee will apply.
  • Only the unused full months of the plan cost will be refunded.
  • Only members who have no claims are eligible for a premium refund.
  • After 60 days, no refunds are granted.
  • If you have only purchased 1 months coverage and cancel within that month, no refund will be due.
